Dayton offers a fascinating shopping experience in the oldest district: Oregon Historic District. This area boasts many fine old buildings, which house interesting stores, restaurants, and nightlife venues. If you are looking for fresh produce, check out the new market district, located by National City 2nd Street Public Market and the Webster Street Market. One of the best things about Dayton is its outlook on music. The Dayton Music Club sponsors local and national musicians and groups with many programs free of charge. There are several performing arts groups ranging from classical drama through contemporary and experimental pieces.
Dayton has a few more secrets. If you are around in May, check out Art in The Park. This is more than just an art exhibition and it attracts many foreign artists too. Also in May, A World A'Fair explores the true meaning of a global village and you can learn about and sample native culture, cuisine, and costumes from about 35 different countries. A great way of broadening your horizons.
A Little About Dayton
Dayton is located in the southwestern region of Ohio. It is named after Revolutionary War hero General Jonathan Dayton, the youngest signer of the U.S. Constitution and one of the first investors in the new town.
Dayton plays a significant role in the industrial and aerospace industries. It is also known for the many technical innovations and inventions developed there, having more patents per capita than any other city in the nation. Some of these inventions include the stepladder, microfiche, cellophane tape, pop top beverage cans, the movie projector, space food, parking meters, the airplane supercharger, the automobile self-starter, gas masks, and the parachute.
Dayton is nicknamed the "Gem City", and is also sometimes known as the "Birthplace of Aviation." The city was the home of the Wright Brothers, poet Paul Laurence Dunbar, and entrepreneur John H. Patterson.
